Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
When I first enrolled at Athabasca University, I wasn’t entirely sure what path I wanted to take—academically, professionally, or even personally. But AU’s flexibility gave me the freedom to figure it out without pressure.
More importantly, ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓprovided me with a learning environment where I could truly thrive. As someone with AuDHD—autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder—and chronic physical illnesses, traditional brick-and-mortar education often felt like an uphill battle. The rigid structure, sensory overload, and lack of accommodations made learning more exhausting than enriching. But ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓchanged that. Here, I’ve been able to pursue my passions while also learning about myself.
Part way through my journey at AU, I was diagnosed with ADHD. I won’t pretend it’s been easy; some days are still a challenge. But ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas allowed me to extend myself the same patience and grace it offers. On days when my symptoms are overwhelming, I don’t have to worry about missing in-person lectures. I can take breaks when I need them so that I can ensure that I’m actually focused when I study. I can minimize distractions. And when my physical health takes a hit, I don’t have to push through pain just to keep up.
Ultimately, ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas given me something invaluable: the chance to learn in a way that works for me. ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas given me an opportunity like no other—to learn like no other.
How has studying at ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhelped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?
Athabasca University has helped me achieve goals I never thought possible.
On a personal level, ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas given me the space to grow in key areas—strengthening my discipline, practising patience, and learning to navigate challenges with resilience. Additionally, it has allowed me to continue doing something I love: travelling. My education isn’t something I have to pause or put on hold; instead, it comes with me. With my laptop and books in my bag, I can take my studies wherever life takes me.
ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas also been instrumental in shaping my professional interests. Its flexibility has allowed me to work and support myself while pursuing my education, and it even opened doors I never imagined. It gave me an opportunity I would never have received anywhere else, becoming an (AUSU) councillor.
I was privileged to serve as the vice-president of community and wellness from 2024-25, and to presently continue being a member of the AUSU council. I’ve gotten to improve my professional skills of advocacy, communication, and leadership—qualities that will be critical when I embark on my next educational journey: law school.
Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?
My fiancée, Sarah, and my parents. All three have been instrumental in my journey. Sarah has always given me that extra “oomph of motivation” when I need it, reminding me of the bigger picture. My mom has always helped me out of my decision paralysis; when I have five different paper topics and can’t decide, we chat it out until I eventually end up with my final decision. My dad has always been motivational in unconventional ways, but ways that work wonderfully for me. He inspires me to always do my best.
What's your favourite course?

What are you plans for the future, after completing your ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓprogram?
I’ll be attending law school with the intention of becoming an international human rights lawyer.
How is your ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓeducation different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. How is ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓlike no other?)
ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas provided access like no other and opportunity like no other. ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓhas reduced barriers to getting a university education, in a setting where I thrive.
